Once your braces are removed, the retention stage of your treatment will begin. Your final orthodontic result depends on wearing your retainers as prescribed, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in so far. We can discuss the benefits of each type of retainer to find the best fit for you and your lifestyle.
The Essix retainer is a transparent, removable retainer that fits over the entire arch of teeth. Similar to Invisalign® trays, Essix retainers have no wires. They are easy to wear and when worn as prescribed, they do a great job of keeping the teeth aligned.
The Hawley retainer, is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic. This retainer fits snugly against the roof of your mouth, while the wire keeps your teeth in perfect position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large selection of colors and/or patterns.
Bonded lingual retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower front teeth. Patients with bonded lingual retainers must be careful as the bonding material can break due to incorrect biting and the teeth may shift quickly. As with braces, it is important to keep the retainer clean and floss under it regularly.
If your retainer breaks at any time during treatment, please do not adjust it yourself. Call us immediately to schedule an emergency appointment.
